After a review of existing literature on the peer relations of SEBD students and current research on the potential of peer education within the classroom, the paper will focus on empirical research concerning non-pedagogical inclusion mechanisms developed by SEBD students: social resilience, the ‘real world’ teaching and leadership dynamics sometimes played by SEBD students vis-à-vis their peers and some of the two way interactions not systematically quantified through teacher observations. The role of SEBD students in peer groups beyond the school perimeter will be investigated.
