Citizenship Education as a New Challenge for Secondary Education: From Theory to Practices

This paper presents the results of a research which is focused on the subject “Educación para la ciudadanía” (Citizenship education) as a new challenge for teaching on secondary level in the 2007-2008 course.

The aim of this research is to analyze in deep the conceptualizations and perceptions about citizen education of teachers and students from Secondary schools from Barcelona and how these conceptions are articulated with daily educational practices. Indeed, guidelines related to Citizen Education from the Department of Education of Catalunya and the Ministry of Education of Barcelona, are analyzed.

This research has used a qualitative approach; interviews and focus groups are made with teachers and students from Secondary schools and personal of the council of the city in order to discover their meanings about citizen education and how they put them into practice. The information was analyzed by using a constant comparative method. The main results are presented in this paper.
