Turn On, Tune In, and Listen

This paper is based on my experience in teaching EFL listening classes for Thai adults who need further listening practice for their workplace use. I have designed listening lessons for such purpose mostly in video viewing form (depending on the original sources) and would like to share this experience since I find that it is very effective in my class. I will divide my paper in four main parts. Firstly I will describe how my listening lessons are designed to meet the principles for teaching listening according to the listening guru like Michael Rost, John Flower Dew,Lindsay Miller, Steve Brown, Marc Helgesen and Jack Richards. I will discuss with examples video lessons that capture on authenticity,cultural references,immediate relevance to students,appealing to students 'motivation and students' background knowledge . Most importantly,I will concentrate on the video which demonstrate varieties of English accents as spoken by native and non-native speakers such as Canadian, Australia, American, British, Philippino, Indonesian, Malaysian, Japanese, Singaporean, etc. Secondly I will elaborate on four main sources that I use for the course: 1 local radio broadcast and local and international television news, 2commercial documentaries including travel documentaries, 3 promotional CD from universities, and 4 movies (both musical and general) I will demonstrate how headline news,special featured news, interviews, speeches for different occasions, weather forecast, television commercials, theatrical trailers, behind-the-scene movie making,etc can all be exploited for the maximum benefit in the EFL classroom. As in my case, cable television news, radio Thailand news, MCOT news (television channel 9), former Channel 11 news with their interviews are the most effective local sources I could find whereas CNN, BBC, Fox, NHK, CCTV, Arirang and Australian channels can be fully exploited in the EFL classroom as well. Then I 'll discuss various types of tasks, activities used in the class which take into account the graded difficulty, variety, bottom up and top down processing, prediction and guessing engagement.The final part of my presentation will be video viewing together with the demonstrated tasks and activities from selected video excerpts.

Dr Kantatip Sinhaneti graduated a BA in English with honors from Chulalongkorn University. Upon graduation she became lecturer in the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University. In 1973 She won Fulbright open competition to further her master degree in TESOL at Michigan State University and continued her PHD in TEFL at the University of Texas at Austin. She taught at Chulalongkorn University Language Institute and helped design English materials for MBA program at Sasin Graduate School for Business Administration of Chulalongkorn University. She was seconded to work as Professional Information officer at the Secretariat of the International Organization "SEAMEO" (The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education) during 1994-2004. She is currently with Shinawatra University as Program Director, Master of Education in Teaching English as an International Language. Her interest is in ESP, business and marketing communication , history and tourism industry.
