Turkish Pre-Service Science Teacher’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge Regarding the Structure of Matter

The purpose of this study was to examine the pre-service science teachers’ competency of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) regarding the structure of matter from three pre-service science teachers in the senior class. A qualitative method with case study design which provided a great deal of information about PCK of pre-service science teachers was used. Data was gathered by semi-structured interviews, participant observations and document analysis which were analyzed using qualitative content analyses. As the result of analyzing data, it was seen that the level of knowledge of pre-service teachers for sub-dimensions of PCK affected the development of PCK. The fact that the pre-service teachers have misconceptions related with the structure of matter subject affected the development of “student understanding” which is one of the sub-dimensions of PCK. In the light of the findings of this study, while PCK is being assessed, its dimension should be investigated in detail. This result shows that associations that are related with teacher preparation should reconsider their curriculum and revise themselves in terms of the dimensions of PCK. Such studies would contribute to the preparation of teachers having enough knowledge for different types of knowledge.
