As a social being, human becomes involved in an interactive communication by entering into a social environment from the moment it is born. One of the occupations where communication is needed most in practical process is the teaching profession. There is a close relationship between how well a teacher performs in his or her job and how competent he or she is in terms social skills. It is a common fact that individuals with inefficient social skills experience social anxiety. Moreover, the expectations of individuals about the future play an important role in arranging the life, having a commitment to life, and providing motivation for life activities. A positive expectation about the future will both increase the commitment to the future profession and the efficiency in that profession. The aim of this study is to determine the social anxiety levels and future expectations of teacher candidates who will need to establish active communication when they start the profession.

This study made use of methodological triangulation by employing qualitative and quantitative research methods together. “The Interaction and Audience Anxiety Scale” was used to determine the social anxiety levels of the students involved in the research. The data obtained through the scale was analyzed by means of SPSS package program. On the other hand, the semi-structured interview technique was utilized in order to determine the expectations of the students concerning the future and the data was analyzed through descriptive analysis. In the data analysis, the data about each interview recording was directly written in the interview form without making any changes. The themes under which the research data gathered were determined by two researchers and the experts formed the coding keys independently from each other. The themes and sub-themes were determined by reaching a consensus on common opinions. The interview data were arranged and interpreted according to the themes and sub-themes. The conclusions and suggestions of the research were formed by means of the findings from the data obtained.

I graduated from Department of Psychological Service in Education, College of Educational Sciences, Ankara University, in 1995. I began working as a research assistant at Eskisehir Osmangazi University in 1996. I earned my Ed.D. from Gazi University in 2004. I have focused studying “self-presentation model of social anxiety” in my doktoral dissertation. I have been working as a faculty member at College of Education in Eskisehir Osmangazi University since 2005. Our college trains and graduates primary, secondary and high school teachers. I teach cources such as Guidance and Psychological Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Introduction to Educational Sciences. My research areas include social skills and social anxiety.
